French Onion Soup

Cheesy and satisfying. French Onion Soup is a classic French dish featuring a rich broth made from onions, beef stock, and white wine. It is typically topped with a layer of melted Gruyère or Swiss cheese and a crouton. The onions are caramelized until they are sweet and tender before being added to the broth.

Ingredients

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 tablespoon butter

  • 1/4 cup dry sherry

  • 1 cup beef broth

  • 1/4 cup grated Gruyère cheese

  • 1 slice French bread

Instructions

  • Caramelize the onions: Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.

  • Add the sherry and broth: Deglaze the pan with the sherry, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. Add the beef broth and bring to a simmer.

  • Assemble the soup: Place a slice of French bread in an oven-safe bowl. Top with the caramelized onions and broth. Sprinkle with the Gruyère cheese.

  • Broil the soup: Broil the soup under the broiler until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.

  • Enjoy your homemade French onion soup!

  • Note: For a richer flavor, you can add a bay leaf to the broth while simmering. Also, feel free to adjust the amount of cheese to your preference.
